A location-based showdown.

I’ll admit it: I’m late to the game when it comes to location-based startups like Gowalla and Foursquare.  It’s probably because I got my first smart phone right around the time that… oh wait, last weekend.

In an effort to make up for my lack of experience with these two apps, I’ve decided to conduct a little experiment.  To celebrate my first trip to SXSW, I’m going to spend the five days I’m in Austin (March 15 - 20, for the music portion of the festival) checking in using both apps.  When I get home, I’ll write up a post comparing the two.

Though Gowalla and Foursquare have been going head-to-head for a couple years now, this year’s competition is going to be bigger than ever given the insane partnerships and new features being initiated by both companies.  Sure, my experiment would probably be more effective were I to be in ATX for interactive week - but until I have a real job and can afford my own badge, I have to take what my major will give me. ;)

My initial bias is toward Foursquare, but I figure that levels the playing field since Austin is Gowalla’s hometown.  I head to Texas at 6 AM on Tuesday, so stay tuned!
